Olympic Complex upgrading works
This page presents the photographic journal of the upgrading works at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (AOSC) and the Olympic Stadium in particular.

As you may well know, stadia.gr followed closely the progress of works at the AOSC and all other Olympic venues from their very early stages. Back then, when the media mentioned nothing about Calatrava's arcs, when nearly no one knew what the Agora was, when... when... Back then, one's sole source of information would be a personal visit to the AOSC worksite or the (now legendary!) webcam of Bung.de! Then people began to get interested in Olympic works, helicopters of TV stations brought in the first aerial pictures... and the rest is history!

The presentation that follows is in the form of thumbnails. You may click on any of them to enlarge the photo and view it in full size. This way makes it easier for you to directly compare what the AOSC and the Olympic Stadium looked like through the course of works.
1. View of the Athens Olympic Stadium "Spyros Louis" from the south
July 2003 - The temporary towers that will assist in the roof's construction are in place.
October 2003 - The first parts of the arcs are assembled 80 metres above ground.
November 2003 - Progress is visible at the upper west arc, which is nearing completion.
December 2003 - Both sets of arcs are in an advanced stage; other roof parts are assembled on the ground.
March 2004 - Both arcs are complete, waiting to be moved towards the stadium. Roof components are put in place.
May 2004 - The west arc is ready, having been moved to its final position over the stadium's stands.
June 2004 - Less than two months before the Olympic Games, both parts of the roof are connected at last.
August 2004 - The stadium is ready and shining in all its new glory during the Olympic Games.

3. View of the whole Athens Olympic Sports Complex from the west
From left to right: velodrome, outdoor & indoor swimming pools, sports hall, stadium
November 2003 - The arcs of the stadium begin to take their shape, while the velodrome roof looks like a Manga dragon! No sign of the Agora.
December 2003 - Visible progress is little, mostly involving the velodrome and the east arc of the stadium. The Agora arcade is still nowhere to be seen.
March 2004 - The velodrome roof is structurally almost ready, the two outdoor swimming pools are progressing, so is the main stadium, but... where is the Agora?!
April 2004 - The roof of the velodrome has slid to its final position, the roof of the main stadium takes its final shape, while (oh yes!) the Agora can now be seen.
May 2004 - Covering material is being put on the velodrome roof, the Agora arcade is complete, while the main stadium has the polycarbonate panels slowly being installed.
June 2004 - The velodrome is ready, the stadium nears completion, while works at the surrounding open areas of the AOSC are clearly visible.
August 2004 - The Olympic Games return home and the AOSC welcomes them, with its best looks on. Athens' new modern landmark is born.
4. View of the Velodrome from the west (except for the first photo)
November 2003 - The velodrome roof at its early stages, seen from the north.
December 2003 - Works on the roof progress and new parts have been added.
April 2004 - The roof has slid to its final position over the velodrome's track and stands.
May 2004 - Covering material is being put on the velodrome roof.
June 2004 - The new roof of the velodrome is now 100% complete.
August 2004 - The most beautiful venue for cycling in the history of the Games.
