NEA SMYRNI STADIUM is currently being upgraded to meet UEFA standards. The works include the replacement of the pitch, the construction of a roof over the west main stand and the upgrading of the stadium's facilities (new areas for players, the press and fans). The total cost is going to be € 3.2 million. The reason for all these works is the qualification of Panionios FC, the home club, for next year's UEFA Cup. It should also be noted that AEK Athens FC have asked to use the stadium for their domestic games next season, following the demolition of "Nikos Goumas" Stadium. Panionios' answer to this request is pending.
