The hall is located in Heraklion (also: Iraklio) on the island
of Crete. Heraklion has an international airport, but you may also
get there by boat from Piraeus. The hall itself lies on the campus
of the Technical Educational Institute (TEI) of Crete, 5 km south-west
of the city centre. To get there, head west towards Rethymno and Hania
through the motorway. Use the exit to "Moires", turn left
after 500m to "Gournes", and you will get to the TEI Crete
main entrance after another 500m. Follow the campus ring road at your
right and you will soon find yourself outside the hall. You may also
see a map
of the campus from the website of TEI Crete (the indoor hall is #19,
not a football field as the map reads).

More
data: The construction of TEI Indoor Hall commenced in 1999, but
it took over 5 years for it to be finished, due to various problems
that had to do with the financing of the project. The total cost
for the completion of the hall reached about € 5.5 million.
You may see some older
photos that were previously on this page and show the progress
of works during construction. Also, have a look at the hall's plans
that were publicised some years ago, helping you to make the comparison
with the "final result".
The indoor hall's capacity may be further increased by 300 seats, through the addition of an extra lower tier. The sports complex also includes a 500-seat theatre as well as a restaurant for the students of TEI Crete (the dormitories of the campus are located nearby). It was initially planned that Iraklio Basketball Club would move into TEI Indoor Hall, until the new Heraklion Arena was ready. Unfortunately, since the hall's inauguration in mid-2004, no professional team has used it. The main problem has to do with its operational costs, for which neither TEI's administration nor the Ministry of Sports seem willing to take the burden. |
The indoor hall is owned by the Technical Educational Institute (TEI) of Crete. |
