SOC chairman: Greek organizers deserve first gold of Games

ATHENS, Aug 12 (AFP) - Declaring that organizers of the Athens
Olympics deserve the first gold medal of the Games, US Olympic
Committee chairman Peter Ueberroth praised an organizational
"miracle" on the opening ceremony's eve.
Ueberroth, whose profit-producing guidance of the 1984 Los
Angeles Olympics ushered in a new era for the Games, praised
preparations and safety measures for a US delegation fearful of
security troubles and anti-American feelings.
"The first gold medal is won already by the city of Athens and
the organizing committee," Ueberroth said. "They have done their
job. They have taken the steps for security and all the rest.
"I will predict these Games will be terrific Games."
Organizers made a last-minute rush to finish venues and security
plans on time after being under pressure for years.
"They have completed the first step of their miracle," Ueberroth
said.

ΝΕΟ ΕΠΕΙΣΟΔΙΟ ΜΕ ΒΡΕΤΑΝΟ ΔΗΜΟΣΙΟΦΡΑΓΟ

Βρετανός δημοσιογράφος διαπιστευμένος της εφημερίδας Observer για την κάλυψη των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων επιχείρησε να μπει κρυφά στο Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο στις 23:15 το βράδυ της Τετάρτης και συνελήφθη.

Ο δημοσιογράφος, τα στοιχεία του οποίου δεν έχουν γίνει γνωστά, εντοπίστηκε από δυνάμεις ασφαλείας και προσήχθη στο αστυνομικό τμήμα Παγκρατίου.

Μετά την εξακρίβωση στοιχείων αφέθηκε ελεύθερος.

Επειδή όμως έχω βαρεθεί να διαβάζω ιστορίες για ντετέκτιβ που κάνουν ζημιά σε μια μικρή χώρα -η οποία παλεύει αυτή τη στιγμή να μη ρεζιλευτεί- θα το θεωρούσα πρέπον να γράπωναν σφιχτά τα όργανα της τάξης έναν Μεξικανό απο τα πόδια και μετ΄αυτού να πολτοποιούσαν έναν, ή και δύο Άγγλους ακόμα (! γιατι όχι Wink

Οι Αμερικανοί σε ταλαιπωρήσουν ψυχολογικά και μπορεί να σε απελάσουν άμα βρουν την παραμικρή ανωμαλία. Κανείς όμως δεν πρόκειται να διανοηθεί να σηκώσει χέρι πάνω σου. Όταν αυτό συμβαίνει και το παίρνουν χαμπάρι τα ΜΜΕ, γίνεται σάλος στην χώρα.

Και εν πάσει περιπτώσει δεν με νοιάζει τί κάνουν οι Αμερικανοί ή τι κάνουν οι δημοσιογράφοι. Με νοιάζει οι αστυνομικοί και την δουλειά τους να κάνουν και να μην πατάνε τα ατομικά δικαιώματα. Στην τελευταία περίπτωση φέρθηκαν άψογα.

Αν δεν συμπεριφερόταν σωστά, θα ήταν χειρότερα τώρα και θα είχε υποφέρει η εικόνα της χώρας πάλι.

Όσο για τους δημοσιογράφους, εννοείται ότι κάνουν τέτοια. Δουλειά τους είναι από τη μία να κυνηγούν τις ατέλεις οποιουδήποτε συστήματος (στην ιδεαλιστική εκδοχή) ή να μας πρήζουν τα ούμπαλα (στην πραγματικότητα).

Πάντως όσο δυσάρεστοι είναι, they keep us honest που λέει και το ρητό.

Και το "χαστουκάκι" θα είναι είδηση γιαυτούς. Να μη σας πω ότι το επιζητούν κιόλας. Καλώς έπραξαν και δεν το έπραξαν οι αστυνομικοί. Μία φυλάκα όμως στο αυτόφωρο για ένα βραδάκι ίσως να ήταν ό,τι πρέπει (και μέσα στα πλαίσια του νόμου)!
