Καλά το σοβαρό ΑΡ άρχισε να ρωτάει τώρα και ταξιτζήδες (who spoke on condition of anonymity) για την Τελετή; Σε λίγο θα πάει σε καφετζούδες και χαρτορίχτρες;; Very Happy Very Happy Από τα πιο παλαβά ρεπορτάζ του ΑΡ που έχω διαβάσει!

Smile

Το θέμα είναι ότι για πρώτη φορά τις βλέπουν και οι ξένοι και η δημοσιογράφοι και η αντίδρασή τους είναι ανάλογη αυτών που είχαμε εμείς: "This handout photo shows Athena, left, and Phevos, the mascots for the Athens 2004 Olympics. They're getting more bad press than the Olsen twins, and worse reviews than the latest Spike Lee flick. Phevos and Athena, siblings named for a pair of Greek deities, are catching an ungodly amount of abuse around Athens."

""We have had, let us say, a very hectic preparation. When the Greeks had delays we urged them to accelerate and, in the end, they did. I always said they would finish in time and over the last few weeks this has happened. They are extremely proud of the games - they are their invention, after all. And if you saw their enthusiasm for the football, you have an idea of the enthusiasm they'll bring to these Olympics."

"People have short memories. Sydney was highly criticised in the build-up. We had lots of controversy and instability - with four chief executives and three presidents of the Sydney games. There was also a major ticketing uproar.

"Of course the controversy in Athens has been much bigger. But I always think of Atlanta in 1996. We had a long honeymoon period before those games, but then we had huge technical and transportation problems. So all this gives me a sense of relativity about the build-up to Athens. I am very optimistic. Athens may surprise you."

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

EDIT :

A well written article from the Toronto Star.

'Kefi' joy grips Athens
Future has arrived for Olympic hosts
Sense of awe over completed job

MITCH POTTER
STAFF REPORTER

ATHENS—The word is kefi, it is pronounced "keh-fee," and to our everlasting regret, there is no English equivalent. But watch for it soon emanating from a Greek soul near you.

An irrepressible joy, a transcendental ebullience, an utterly profound sense of satisfaction in the moment: kefi is all of this and more. Put another way, kefi is that state of heart, if not of mind, that moves one to smash plates in sheer happiness.

Here in Athens, still three days from Olympic lift-off, flashes of kefi are mounting daily. At the brand new Neratziotissa Station, where a brand new Siemens bullet train links the brand new Athens airport with the brand new OAKA Olympic Complex, we watched an Athenian family step gingerly onto the platform, agape in wonder at all that has been built, so well and so quickly.

The wonder turned to momentary confusion when the train's doors failed to open. Then they spotted the loonie-sized green button flashing at waist-level. Presto. With cries of "Opa!" they climbed aboard, beaming smiles of awe to a future that is now.

There are, of course, at least two $2 billion questions looming over it all, questions larger than the Olympics itself: in a world still numb from vestigial visions of Twin Towers terror, can our species even trust itself to come together in this way? And, at the price of an Orwellian security blanket five times more expensive than Sydney 2000, is it really worth it?

Athenians, who have endured so much to get here — and are almost certain to endure much, much more when the final bill rolls in — answer now in the affirmative.

At Syntagma Square yesterday, Helene Papadatou, 44, shrugged off the security questions as she and her husband led their 5-year-old son through a day tour of their transformed city. Though they are locals, they were unabashedly playing tourist in their own backyard, videotaping their first glimpse of the freshly made-over city centre.

Athens, long famous for its day-and-night contrasts — misery by day, magic by night — now looks stunning around the clock.

"All along, our answer to the delays was, `We are a last-minute culture. We will get there,'" she laughed.

"But now that it's done, I confess: We had our doubts. But I am so happy with what we see. I don't care about security. Everything that can be done is being done. And I don't care about the price, either. Everything has a cost. But this is worth it."

The burgeoning sense of kefi is not lost on Marc George, a 50-year-old professor of Latin and Greek studies at University of Louvain in Bruges, Belgium. A true Hellenophile, George has no Greek blood, but considers himself one of the family, having led his students on school trips to Athens for 18 summers.

"I tried to volunteer with the Belgian Olympic Committee but they refused me because I was too old. But Athens 2004 accepted me, which is even better," said George, who will spend the next three weeks on traffic detail.

"I just had to be here. I love the sports of course but it goes beyond that. I teach Greek philosophy, the classics. I am here to feel this spirit of mind and soul that only the Greeks understand."

When the Star first explored preparations for Athens in November, 2000, it found a city so backward in basic infrastructure requirements there seemed a very real possibility the International Olympic Committee would make good on its veiled threats to pull the Games altogether.

Already reeling from the burden of reforms demanded by the European Union, Athens felt as though the sheer weight of antiquity was altogether too much to cut through.

Today, as the country promised all along, a Big Fat Greek Olympics is certain. A shortfall of visitors — some citing security fears, others who doubted the city would be ready — could mean half-empty houses for many events. And the triple-shifted race to complete construction, coupled with extra security burden, have some Greek analysts fearing the final tally may top $15 billion. That is nothing a global television audience of potentially 4 billion people is likely to notice. And even now, with the eyes of the world already upon them, the financial angst appears to have taken a holiday.

Eventually, hard questions will come when Greece learns the real price of Athens 2004. For now, let there be kefi.

More than 10,000 Canadians will be among those converging on Athens — athletes, family, friends and a disparate assortment of garden-variety sports enthusiasts.

Then there are the Greek-Canadians, drawn back from the diaspora to their ancestral home as spectators and volunteers, and conversely, Canadian-Greeks, living here as dual-citizen expats.

Among the latter is Saskatoon-born Kathryn Lukey-Coutsocostas, who is already neck-deep in pre-Games frenzy as a volunteer at the Athens 2004 Main Press Centre. She arrived 25 years ago, newly wed to her Athenian husband, who she met as a dorm-mate at University of Manitoba. And say what you will of security fears, Lukey-Coutsocostas says she wouldn't miss this for the world.

"All the expats and all the Greeks of the diaspora, we are so proud of this moment. The country put it all together its own way. I just couldn't imagine not being a part of it," said Lukey-Coutsocostas, who lives in Thessaloniki.Long before 9/11, she said, Athens 2004 beckoned as an historic moment twice over: an Olympiad with the promise to restore ancestral purpose to an event addled by drugs, corruption and overarching commercialism; and for Greece, a colossal last leap into the Western modernity that has been a national struggle for the better part of a decade.

"We've been in transition throughout this whole process, opening ourselves to Europe as we readied for the Games. The concern for so many was in holding on to the national identity," she said. "I was always comfortable with what was coming, as a Canadian living here. I knew from our blend of cultures in Canada that it can only be a good thing. We can work with it, benefit from it."

Today, said Lukey-Coutsocostas, the legacy of that transformation won't simply be state-of-the-art infrastructure. Greece can now march forward, the weight of its past leavened by the promise of its future.

Such is the kefi that her biggest worry today is what she might do in the event that a Canadian and a Greek athlete find themselves chasing the same medal.

"I honestly don't know which one I would cheer for the most," she laughs.

"You can theorize all you want but until that moment comes, they are both number one in my heart. Put it this way: if they both leave with medals, I leave a winner either way."

Exclamation Exclamation
